Originally a nurse, now a senior manager (Information Technology Strategic Development Lead), I have a thirty year history at the hospital and bring a broad beneficial insight to the Staff Governor role.
As your representative I will ensure strategic decisions take into consideration impact on this constituency. As your Governor for the past three years I have been involved in:
- Service development strategy
- Revision of the Trust's Constitution
- Appointment of three new Non-Executive Directors
I bring leadership skills with extensive knowledge of the importance and dependency of the staff in this constituency.
I have provided leadership for many successful hospital-wide complex projects and continue to do so. These recognised the value and inter-dependency of clinical and non-clinical functions in the operation of the hospital. I believe the application of this knowledge and experience will contribute to the development of the Trust in its Foundation status.
Sarah Brant for Nursing & Midwifery
Term of office: September 2008 to September 2011

Address: Sarah Brant, c/o Board Secretary, Luton & Dunstable Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Lewsey Road, Luton LU4 0DZ
I believe it is important that the Trust is represented by Staff governors who have grown and developed within the Trust and are prepared to speak on behalf of nursing and midwifery staff. I am a nurse and have worked as a midwife at the Trust since 1984 and have the knowledge as a professional clinician to be a credible representative who is prepared to make myself heard.
It is important that midwifery and women's health is represented by some-one with the knowledge and experience to voice the views of women, families and staff. My role will enable me to influence change and have an impact on the way care is provided.
I am honest, impartial, listen, and communicate well. As a Senior Midwife with 25 years' experience, also a local resident and service user, I appreciate the importance of coordinated group working and multi-representation.

Since becoming a Governor some two years ago, and in addition to my own volunteering, I have become increasingly involved at the hospital. I welcome the opportunity to represent and be the voice of the volunteers for another term.
My voluntary involvement over a long period has provided me with excellent patient and staff liaison skills and valuable knowledge of hospital procedures.
As an existing Governor I am working closely with the hospital's Communication team to promote FT membership and develop communty support for the NICU Appeal.
Chi Hwa Chan for Medical & Dental

The long term vision and development of the hospital has significant impact on the delivery of health care to the local population. The implications to hospital medical and non-medical staff are equally important. I would like to play an active role to facilitate mutual understanding between the Council of Governors and the hospital medical staff.
Most of my work involves a multi-disciplinary approach involving other medical and surgical specialties. I believe I can communicate well with other medical colleagues and bring their views to the Council.
I have been a consultant in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the L&D since 2001. My job also involves working at Bedford Hospital two days each week.
Lesley Groves for Nursing & Midwifery

Having worked at the hospital for 25 years, I will ensure that the views of midwives and nurses are fairly represented. I have been a senior midwife and ward manager for man years. I also have experience as a school Governor and have been a service user, all of which will help me in my new role. I will be able to keep in touch with the needs of both the community and the staff.

I am employed by the L&D hospital as a Building Technician dealing with maintenance issues and project work. I have excellent maintenance skills and site knowledge based on years of personal experience with individuals and departments.
With 36 years service at the L&D I feel I could make a difference by improving the hospital experience for patients and staff. My detailed knowledge of how the Trust runs on a day-to-day basis means that i am in a unique position to advise on hospital issues.
Phil Spencer for Admin & Clerical & Management
Term of office: August 2008 to September 2010

I have worked at the L&D for 18+ years, 15+ years as a Trade Union Representative for Unison. I am currently Staff Side Chair and active on several committees within the Trust.
I feel it is important to be involved in a Governor role to ensure staff are given a voice and are kept aware of changes or decisions which may affect them. I believe in a public NHS and feel it is important to help prevent profit from pain – privatisation.
Barbara Turner
Term of Office: September 2009 to September 2012

I have been a Radiographer for 33 years and have long-standing loyalty to this Trust. My current role is radiology services manager and I enjoy the challenge of service re-design and changing technology - working across boundaries.
Allied Health Professionals provide clinical support across a wide range of departments that are fundamental to the diagnosis and treatment of patients. However, their role is often overlooked when planning service changes, resulting in a reactive rather than proactive response. I strongly believe that we should look more at the patient journey rather than operate as discreet directorates.
Clive Underwood for Nursing & Midwifery
Term of office: August 2007 to September 2010
E-mail: clive.underwood@ldh.nhs.uk
Address: Clive Underwood Luton & Dunstable Hospital NHSFT Lewsey Road Luton LU4 0DZ
I work as a Practice and Development Practitioner in Theatres and also teach on a wide range of professional/clinical programmes across the Trust. I am a clear communicator with strong negotiating experience and skills, and am well informed about issues effecting the L&D.
I have a passion and determination to represent the interests off all nurses and midwives and to promote patient care issues at the highest level. I have extensive experience in speaking for my colleagues and on patient care issues.
